Safety & Insurance
Last updated · 2026-05-14
The trail above Lake Bovilla is rewarding precisely because it is real mountain terrain — steep in places, with loose rock, exposed views, and a short stretch of metal stairs bolted into a cliff. We take safety seriously. This page explains what we carry, what we recommend you carry, and what is not covered.
What we provide
- An experienced English-speaking guide on every departure. Guides know the trail in every season and carry a first-aid kit, a charged phone, and an emergency number for the local mountain rescue (SAR).
- Round-trip transport in a vehicle suitable for the unpaved final stretch of the access road.
- A safety briefing at the start of the trail covering pace, weather, the metal stair section, and what to do if you become separated.
- Public-liability insurance covering our operations as a tour operator in Albania.
What we strongly recommend you bring
- Grippy footwear. Sneakers or hiking shoes with real tread. Open sandals are not safe on this trail.
- Water. At least one litre per person, more in summer. There is a restaurant midway up where you can buy more.
- Sun protection. A hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. The trail is largely unshaded.
- A light jacket. Wind at the summit can be sharper than in Tirana, even in summer.
- Personal travel insurance covering hiking and mountain activities up to ~2,000 m elevation. See below.
What is not covered by our insurance
Our public-liability cover protects you against negligence on our part. It does not cover:
- Personal medical costs from a slip, twist, or fall caused by the inherent risk of hiking.
- Lost or damaged personal belongings (phones, cameras, backpacks).
- Costs of evacuation or repatriation if you need to leave the country for treatment.
For these, you should have your own travel insurance with adventure-sports cover. Most general travel insurance policies include hiking up to 2,000 m — check yours before you arrive.
The metal stairs
The final approach to the summit is a set of metal stairs bolted into the cliff face, with a handrail. There is a small fee (100 LEK ≈ €1) to use them. They are safe in dry conditions but feel exposed if you have a significant fear of heights. You can enjoy the view from the restaurant level without climbing them — your guide will not push you.
Weather and trail closures
We monitor weather closely the day before and the morning of every departure. If a thunderstorm is forecast, or if heavy rain has made the road or rocks unsafe, we reschedule. See the Cancellation & Refunds page for what happens in that case.
Emergencies on the trail
If something happens, stay calm and stay with the guide. The local emergency number in Albania is 112. Mountain rescue can reach the upper trail by 4×4 within roughly 45 minutes from Tirana.
Children, pregnancy, and existing conditions
The hike is suitable for children aged 6 and up with reasonable fitness. The 4×4 SUV Adventure is a good alternative for younger children, pregnant guests, or anyone with cardiac, respiratory, or joint conditions that make a steep climb inadvisable. If you are unsure, write to us in advance and we will help you choose the right option.
Note — verify your actual insurance cover, emergency-contact procedure, and first-aid certification status with your insurer and your guides before publication.
