i. An honest review

Is Lake Bovilla worth visiting?

Short answer — absolutely.

If you are wondering whether to add the Bovilla Reservoir to your itinerary, the long answer is the same as the short one. Located twenty to twenty-five kilometers northeast of the capital, the lake is hidden between two dramatic mountain ranges within the Dajti National Park region — and offers some of the most striking scenery you can find anywhere near the city.

But to make the most of your trip, it helps to know exactly what to expect. Here are the four things every visitor should hear before they set off.

  • 01

    The Views are Unmatched

Vivid blue-green water surrounded by lush, rugged cliffs. The view from the “Balcony of Bovilla” is arguably the best photo spot in central Albania.

  • 02

    The Road is an Adventure

Seventy percent of the drive is smooth asphalt; the final stretch is unpaved, dusty, and pot-holed. A guided ride is the most stress-free way to visit.

  • 03

    A Drinking Water Reservoir

Bovilla supplies the majority of Tirana’s drinking water, so swimming is prohibited and the muddy shores aren’t ideal. The magic is in the hike and the elevated views.

  • 04

    Timing is Everything

Viewpoints get busy between 11:00 and 14:00. Tours are timed to give you the best light for photography while side-stepping the crowds.

ii. The hike · scaling Mount Gamti

A short trail with an outsized payoff.

You don’t need to be an expert mountaineer to experience the best of Bovilla. The hike up Mount Gamti is short — but the reward at the summit is genuinely cinematic.

The metal stairs at the top

The final push to the summit features a set of metal stairs bolted straight into the rock face. There is a nominal fee of 100 LEK (about €1) to access the upper viewing platform. If you have a severe fear of heights, the restaurant level offers a comparable panorama without the vertigo.

The reward

At the summit, you are greeted with sweeping, uninterrupted views of the entire reservoir and the sprawling green valleys below. On a clear day, the line of sight extends to the eastern flank of Dajti and, faintly, the foothills approaching Krujë.

iv. Need to know

Practical notes for the trail.

Four small things that turn a good trip into a great one. None of them require gear you don’t already own.

  • Footwear

Leave the sandals at the hotel. The trail has loose gravel and rocky steps — grippy sneakers or hiking boots are required.

  • Food & Drink

An excellent restaurant halfway up the mountain offers traditional Albanian food, cold beers, and clean restrooms at very reasonable prices. You are also welcome to pack a lunch and picnic by the water.

  • Sun Protection

The Albanian sun is strong from May to October, and the trail offers little shade. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and at least a liter of drinking water per person.

  • Connectivity

Cell service can drop off as you get deeper into the canyon. Download your tickets, offline maps, or playlist before leaving Tirana.

v. Frequently asked

Six honest answers before you book.

If you have a question we haven’t covered, the fastest way to get a reply is the contact form below — usually within a few hours.

  • Q.01

How far is Lake Bovilla from Tirana?

    A.

Roughly 20–25 km, which translates to a 60 to 75-minute drive depending on city traffic and the condition of the mountain road. Tours leave central Tirana between 07:00 and 09:00 to time the light and the crowds.

  • Q.02

Can I swim in Lake Bovilla?

    A.

No. Because the reservoir supplies drinking water to the capital, swimming is restricted. The shores are also quite muddy. The true highlight of Bovilla is the hiking and the views — bring a camera, not a swimsuit.

  • Q.03

Do I need to be extremely fit for the hike?

    A.

Not at all. The trail is steep and will raise your heart rate, but it is very short — under an hour to the summit. Anyone with a moderate level of baseline fitness can complete it, and guides always allow for rest stops along the way.

  • Q.04

Why shouldn’t I just drive myself?

    A.

The last few kilometers of the road are unpaved, uneven, and filled with potholes. Most standard rental cars are not equipped for it, and damages may not be covered by rental insurance. A guided tour removes the stress of navigating the terrain and finding parking.

  • Q.05

What is the best time of year to visit?

    A.

Late April through October offers the best weather and the clearest light. May and June are particularly beautiful, with green hillsides and full reservoir levels. July and August are hot — start early to avoid the midday sun.

  • Q.06

    Are tours family-friendly?

    A.

Yes. Children aged six and up generally handle the trail well with breaks. The 4×4 option is a good fit for very young travelers or anyone who wants to skip the climb entirely.
