Lake Bovilla & Mount Gamti

i. An honest review

Is Lake Bovilla worth visiting?

Short answer — absolutely.

If you are wondering whether to add the Bovilla Reservoir to your itinerary, the long answer is the same as the short one. Located twenty to twenty-five kilometers northeast of the capital, the lake is hidden between two dramatic mountain ranges within the Dajti National Park region — and offers some of the most striking scenery you can find anywhere near the city.

But to make the most of your trip, it helps to know exactly what to expect. Here are the four things every visitor should hear before they set off.

  • 01

    The Views are Unmatched

Vivid blue-green water surrounded by lush, rugged cliffs. The view from the “Balcony of Bovilla” is arguably the best photo spot in central Albania.

  • 02

    The Road is an Adventure

Seventy percent of the drive is smooth asphalt; the final stretch is unpaved, dusty, and pot-holed. A guided ride is the most stress-free way to visit.

  • 03

    A Drinking Water Reservoir

Bovilla supplies the majority of Tirana’s drinking water, so swimming is prohibited and the muddy shores aren’t ideal. The magic is in the hike and the elevated views.

  • 04

    Timing is Everything

Viewpoints get busy between 11:00 and 14:00. Tours are timed to give you the best light for photography while side-stepping the crowds.

ii. At a glance

Lake Bovilla, by the numbers.

Lake Bovilla is a 4.6 km² reservoir in the Dajti National Park region, about 20–25 km northeast of Tirana. Built in 1996 and filled by 1998, it holds back a mountain river to supply most of the capital's drinking water, which is why the water runs that vivid turquoise — and why swimming is prohibited. Its level rises and falls 7–10 m with the seasons, peaking in the rainy winter months.

ii. The hike · scaling Mount Gamti

A short trail withan outsized payoff.

You don’t need to be an expert mountaineer to experience the best of Bovilla. The hike up Mount Gamti is short — but the reward at the summit is genuinely cinematic.

The metal stairs at the top

The final push to the summit features a set of metal stairs bolted straight into the rock face. There is a nominal fee of 100 LEK (about €1) to access the upper viewing platform. If you have a severe fear of heights, the restaurant level offers a comparable panorama without the vertigo.

The reward

At the summit, you are greeted with sweeping, uninterrupted views of the entire reservoir and the sprawling green valleys below. On a clear day, the line of sight extends to the eastern flank of Dajti and, faintly, the foothills approaching Krujë. Mount Gamti itself rises to roughly 1,268 m; the trail tops out at the Balcony of Bovilla viewpoint at about 620 m, some 160 m above the trailhead.

iv. Need to know

Practical notesfor the trail.

Four small things that turn a good trip into a great one. None of them require gear you don’t already own.

  • Footwear

Leave the sandals at the hotel. The trail has loose gravel and rocky steps — grippy sneakers or hiking boots are required.

  • Food & Drink

An excellent restaurant halfway up the mountain offers traditional Albanian food, cold beers, and clean restrooms at very reasonable prices. You are also welcome to pack a lunch and picnic by the water.

  • Sun Protection

The Albanian sun is strong from May to October, and the trail offers little shade. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and at least a liter of drinking water per person.

  • Connectivity

Cell service can drop off as you get deeper into the canyon. Download your tickets, offline maps, or playlist before leaving Tirana.

v. Frequently asked

Honest answers before you book.

These are the questions worth asking any Bovilla operator — so here are our straight answers. If we haven’t covered something, the contact form below is the fastest way to reach us, usually within a few hours.

  • Q.01

    How big are the groups?

    A.

Small by design. Every departure is capped at twelve guests and we never merge you into a packed minibus — many days the group is just four to eight people. Ask us and we’ll tell you exactly how many are booked on your date before you pay.

  • Q.02

What time do tours leave — and can I start earlier?

    A.

Departures are timed between roughly 07:00 and 09:00 to catch the best light and stay ahead of the crowds. An earlier start means fewer people at the viewpoint, softer light for photos, and cooler air on the hike — and for small groups we’re happy to adjust the pickup time. Just tell us what you’d prefer.

  • Q.03

    Is hotel pickup included?

    A.

Yes. Round-trip pickup and drop-off at your Tirana hotel or apartment is included in every tour, so there’s no taxi or rental-car logistics to worry about.

  • Q.04

How much free time do I get at the viewpoint and on the hike?

    A.

We don’t rush you through. You get a proper block of free time at the Balcony of Bovilla and the summit to take photos and soak it in, and on quieter departures we can linger longer. If photography is your priority, tell us when you book and we’ll plan the day around the best light.

  • Q.05

    Is the guide local?

    A.

Yes — your guide is a local Albanian who knows the area well: the best timing, the quietest viewpoints, and where the photos are. We focus on Bovilla and Mount Gamti rather than selling dozens of unrelated tours.

  • Q.06

How far is Lake Bovilla from Tirana?

    A.

Roughly 20–25 km, which translates to a 60 to 75-minute drive depending on city traffic and the condition of the mountain road. Tours leave central Tirana between 07:00 and 09:00 to time the light and the crowds.

  • Q.07

Can I swim in Lake Bovilla?

    A.

No. Because the reservoir supplies drinking water to the capital, swimming is restricted. The shores are also quite muddy. The true highlight of Bovilla is the hiking and the views — bring a camera, not a swimsuit.

  • Q.08

Do I need to be extremely fit for the hike?

    A.

Not at all. The trail is steep and will raise your heart rate, but it is very short — under an hour to the summit. Anyone with a moderate level of baseline fitness can complete it, and guides always allow for rest stops along the way.

  • Q.09

Why shouldn’t I just drive myself?

    A.

The last few kilometers of the road are unpaved, uneven, and filled with potholes. Most standard rental cars are not equipped for it, and damages may not be covered by rental insurance. A guided tour removes the stress of navigating the terrain and finding parking.

  • Q.10

What is the best time of year to visit?

    A.

Late April through October offers the best weather and the clearest light. May and June are particularly beautiful, with green hillsides and full reservoir levels. July and August are hot — start early to avoid the midday sun.

  • Q.11

    Are tours family-friendly?

    A.

Yes. Children aged six and up generally handle the trail well with breaks. The 4×4 option is a good fit for very young travelers or anyone who wants to skip the climb entirely.

  • Q.12

Is there a restaurant or food at Lake Bovilla?

    A.

Yes. There's one restaurant — Bovilla Restorant — set above the lake near the upper viewpoint, with glass walls and a panorama that stretches across to Mount Dajti. The menu is traditional Albanian: charcoal-grilled lamb, qofte, fresh salads and fries, with mains around €8–12. A few honest caveats — it's cash only, vegetarian options are limited, and the access road is the same rough, unpaved track as the rest of the drive. You're also welcome to pack a picnic and eat by the water.

  • Q.13

    How tall is Mount Gamti?

    A.

Mount Gamti rises to about 1,268 m above sea level, on the western edge of the Dajti National Park region. The hike doesn't summit the peak — it climbs to the Balcony of Bovilla viewpoint at roughly 620 m, about 160 m above the trailhead, which is where the panorama over the reservoir opens up.

  • Q.14

Is Lake Bovilla a natural lake or a reservoir?

    A.

Bovilla is an artificial reservoir, not a natural lake. The dam was completed in 1996 and filled by 1998, holding back a mountain river to supply most of Tirana's drinking water — which is why the water runs such a vivid turquoise and why swimming is prohibited.

  • Q.15

What is there to do at Lake Bovilla?

    A.

The main things to do are hiking Mount Gamti to the Balcony of Bovilla viewpoint, photographing the turquoise reservoir and Bovilla Canyon, and having lunch at the lakeside restaurant. Swimming is prohibited (it's a drinking-water reservoir), so plan a hiking-and-views day rather than a beach one.
