i. An honest review

Is Lake Bovilla worth visiting?

Short answer — absolutely.

If you are wondering whether to add the Bovilla Reservoir to your itinerary, the long answer is the same as the short one. Located twenty to twenty-five kilometers northeast of the capital, the lake is hidden between two dramatic mountain ranges within the Dajti National Park region — and offers some of the most striking scenery you can find anywhere near the city.

But to make the most of your trip, it helps to know exactly what to expect. Here are the four things every visitor should hear before they set off.

  • 01

    The Views are Unmatched

Vivid blue-green water surrounded by lush, rugged cliffs. The view from the “Balcony of Bovilla” is arguably the best photo spot in central Albania.

  • 02

    The Road is an Adventure

Seventy percent of the drive is smooth asphalt; the final stretch is unpaved, dusty, and pot-holed. A guided ride is the most stress-free way to visit.

  • 03

    A Drinking Water Reservoir

Bovilla supplies the majority of Tirana’s drinking water, so swimming is prohibited and the muddy shores aren’t ideal. The magic is in the hike and the elevated views.

    Timing is Everything

Viewpoints get busy between 11:00 and 14:00. Tours are timed to give you the best light for photography while side-stepping the crowds.
