Quad Bike vs 4×4 at Bovilla Lake
Last updated · 2026-08-09
Should I book the quad tour or the 4×4 tour at Lake Bovilla?
Book the quad tour if you want an active, hands-on ride and the lower shared-seat price. Book the 4×4 if you're traveling with young children, want hotel pickup, or prefer to be driven rather than ride yourself. Both reach the same lake and canyon.

We're the only Bovilla operator running both a quad/ATV tour and a 4×4 SUV tour up the same mountain track, so we get this question a lot: which one should you actually book? Here's the honest answer, not a sales pitch for either.
At a glance

| Duration | 3–4 hours | ~4 hours |
| Hotel pickup | No, meet at our base camp | Yes, Tirana, Krujë, Durrës, Golem |
| Who's driving | You (or your riding partner) | Our driver-guide |
| Physical effort | Active, you steer, brake, and feel every bump | Minimal, you ride along |
| Good for young kids | Under 6s need prior quad experience | Yes, free child seats, under 6s go free |
| Timing flexibility | Fixed departures: 9:00, 13:00, 16:30 | Morning, afternoon, or sunset on request |

Fitness level
The quad tour is genuinely active: you're steering, braking, and absorbing every rut on 40 minutes of off-road track each way, plus a short uphill ride to the viewpoint. It suits people who want an adrenaline element, not just a view. The 4×4 asks nothing of you physically beyond a short, flat walk from the parking spot to the Balcony of Bovilla, our driver takes the rough track. If you have any doubt about your comfort with an active ride, the 4×4 is the safer choice.
Weather
Both tours run the same unpaved mountain road, so the same rain policy applies: light rain doesn't cancel either, but a forecast thunderstorm reschedules or refunds. The difference is comfort in marginal weather, on the quad you're exposed to wind, dust, and drizzle directly, on the 4×4 you're inside an air-conditioned vehicle. On a hot, dusty summer day or in cooler, damper shoulder-season weather, the 4×4 is the more comfortable ride.
Group type
Traveling as a couple or with friends who want to actively ride together, book the quad, sharing a bike at €45 per person is one of the cheapest ways to reach Bovilla with us. Traveling as a family, in a larger group, or with anyone who'd rather not operate a vehicle, book the 4×4, it can also be booked privately if you'd rather not share the vehicle with other guests.
Kids
This is the clearest differentiator. The 4×4 is the easiest of our four tours for young children: free child seats, under-6s go free, and almost no walking. The quad tour does not accept children under 6 unless they already have quad-riding experience, it's built around active riding, not a family outing with small kids.
Price
Sharing a quad at €45 per person is our second-cheapest tour after the Classic Half-Day hike. The 4×4 shared seat is slightly cheaper at €40 per person but includes hotel pickup, which the quad tour does not, so factor in your own transport to our base camp if you're comparing on price alone.
A third option: skip the vehicle entirely
If neither riding nor being driven appeals, our original Classic Half-Day tour reaches the same viewpoint on foot, via the Mount Gamti hiking trail. It's the cheapest tour we run and the only one that gets you to the Balcony of Bovilla under your own power.
