Lake Bovilla from Durrës

How do you get to Lake Bovilla from Durrës?
By car or on a guided tour with hotel pickup. Lake Bovilla is about 55 km from Durrës, roughly 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45 each way, and there is no bus or train on any part of the route. You drive east to Tirana, around the capital on the ring road, then northeast through Zall-Bastar and up an unpaved mountain track to the dam. Three of our four tours collect you from your hotel in Durrës or Golem at the same price we charge in Tirana.

Lake Bovilla is about 55 km from Durrës by road, and realistically 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45 of driving each way. There is no bus and no train, not from Durrës and not from anywhere else. Route planners will quote you under an hour because they time the final unpaved climb at road speed, which is not how that section drives. This is the honest version for anyone based on the coast, in Durrës itself or down at Golem and Qerret.
| Option | Realistic round trip | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Guided tour with hotel pickup | Half day to full day | Anyone staying on the coast |
| Taxi | 4h of driving, plus the wait | Almost nobody, see below |
| Rental car | 4h of driving | High-clearance vehicles only |
| No service | Does not exist |
The route from Durrës
You head east on the SH2 toward Tirana, take the ring road around the capital rather than driving through it, then turn northeast through Zall-Bastar. Roughly 70% of the drive is good asphalt. The last climb is unpaved, dusty and pot-holed, running through Bovilla Canyon to the dam.
Two things decide how the morning goes. The first is traffic on the Durrës to Tirana stretch, heavy from about 08:00 and again in the late afternoon. The second is the gravel: after heavy rain the final kilometres are what turns a pleasant drive into a slow one.
Why a taxi from Durrës rarely works
From central Tirana a one-way taxi to the dam runs about 2,000 LEK, roughly €17, and many drivers refuse the trip outright because the last kilometres are hard on their cars. From Durrës you add the whole coast-to-capital leg in both directions, and you still meet the same wall at the top: there is no way to hail a taxi back from the dam, and phone signal drops in the canyon. If you try it anyway, agree the fare and a fixed return time before you leave, and expect some drivers to say no.
Which tours collect you in Durrës or Golem
Three of our four tours include hotel pickup in Tirana, Krujë, Durrës and Golem, at the same price wherever we collect you:
- The Classic half-day, €20 per person, the lake and the Mount Gamti hike.
- The 4×4 SUV adventure, €40 per person, the mountain road itself in about three hours.
- Bovilla and Krujë castle, €80 per person, a full day that adds the castle and the Ottoman bazaar.
The exception is the quad and ATV tour, which meets at our base camp on the road to Bovilla rather than at a hotel. From the coast that means driving yourself to the meeting point first.
Coming from Golem or Qerret
The beach strip south of Durrës is the same pickup area, and collection simply runs a few minutes earlier. If you are on a beach holiday and giving Bovilla one day, spend it on the full-day option: Krujë sits north of Tirana, so the lake and the castle fold into one loop from the coast instead of two separate trips inland.
When to go, and one thing to plan around
April to October, and early. The viewpoints fill between 11:00 and 14:00, so an early pickup from the coast buys you softer light and a quieter trail. The month-by-month breakdown is in our best time to visit guide. The thing to plan around: swimming is prohibited, because Bovilla is Tirana's drinking-water reservoir. The day is about the hike and the views, and the coast you came from is the better swim anyway.
If you would rather make your own way in, our full guide to getting to Lake Bovilla covers the road, the taxi problem and the rental-car warnings in detail.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a bus from Durrës to Lake Bovilla?
No. There is no bus and no train to Lake Bovilla from Durrës, from Tirana, or from anywhere else. The village of Zall-Bastar partway along the route has occasional local minibus service, but nothing continues up the gravel road to the dam and the trailhead.
How far is Lake Bovilla from Durrës?
About 55 km by road, and realistically 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45 of driving each way. Online route planners quote well under an hour because they time the final unpaved climb at normal road speed. The last stretch is gravel and slow.
Can I visit Lake Bovilla on a day trip from a Durrës beach hotel?
Easily. The half-day tour has you back at your hotel in the afternoon, and the full-day Krujë combo uses the whole day. Both include pickup and drop-off at your hotel in Durrës or Golem, so the drive and the unpaved section are not your problem.
Do you pick up from Golem and Qerret as well as Durrës?
Yes. Golem, Qerret and the rest of the beach strip south of Durrës are the same pickup area, at the same price as a pickup in Tirana. Collection just runs a few minutes earlier to cover the extra road.
Can you swim in Lake Bovilla?
No. Bovilla is the reservoir that supplies most of Tirana's drinking water, so swimming is prohibited and the shores are muddy rather than inviting. Coming from Durrës or Golem you already have the better swim behind you.
